How Much Money Did Super Smash Bros Ultimate Make
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Sales Reach 25 Million, Almost Double Brawl's
Sakurai better enjoy that break while he can - Nintendo will want a sequel.
Unsurprisingly, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate had already taken the crown for best selling Smash game. With that many crossovers packed into one game - and, you know, on a console people actually own - it was always destined to be the biggest entry in the series yet. However, I don't think we could have predicted just how astronomically successful it has been.
Ultimate hasn't just overtaken previous record older, Brawl, in the race - it's lapped it. Ultimate has almost doubled Brawl's lifetime sales, sitting at 25.71 units sold, as opposed to 13.32 million.
This news comes from Nintendo's most recent financial report, giving us the stats on the Switch's best performing titles. It reveals that Ultimate is the third best selling game on the system, and miles ahead of its predecessors.
Utilimate's success is a far cry from the previous instalment, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. According to a financial report on the console, it only ever reached 5.38 million copies sold, which is admittedly a strong showing on the ill-fated platform.
However, it is worth noting that the combined sales of Smash for 3DS and Wii U did outperform Brawl, reaching 15 million units. The 3DS version was the best selling of the generation, beating its home console counterpart by around 4 million.
This latest report is good news across the board for Nintendo. It also revealed that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has shifted almost 39 million copies, making it not only the best performing in the series, but on the console itself. The news also maintains Mario Kart 8's record as the best selling racing game in the US, so saving it from the Wii U curse was definitely a good move.
With any luck, this success won't impact Masahiro Sakurai's vacation. The series director seems to be enjoying his break, since the release of Sora concluded Ultimate's development. And while he isn't ruling out another instalment, it's probably fair to assume we won't be seeing it anytime soon.
